Can you blame me?
We’ll see how far I am from the Outer Banks once I leave the other side of the forest.

Lynchburg VA to Nags Head is a solid 5 hours if you take the fastest route.

yeah theres really no good way of getting to the outer banks unless you live like across the sound from them haha

I used to camp in those woods all the time in high school. It was one of the few places you were allowed an open flame. Thanks for the pics!

I’m aiming for your back highway recommendation. I’m sure I won’t make it to the beach tonight but I’ll do so tomorrow. Maybe.

Very cool area. I’ll have a few more pics to share later.

I lived in Greenville NC for 5 years so I had my choice of routes. Either highway 64 all the way there, or the beautiful desolation of 264. That’s some of the most desolate area on the eastern seaboard.

Jealous
of the bugs in your teeth...

Are you planning on staying in a hotel tonight? If so, Greenville has plenty. Points beyond that have fewer accommodations.

Thanks, that’s what I needed to know.

Oh hey, I’m there right now too!

Let me know if you need food recs. Greenville is a college town with a big hospital, so it's decently sized compared to the surrounding towns.

Nice! Where?

I genuinely don’t want to think about how few bugs I’ve seen splatter either the Jeep or me this trip.

Basically any local dives with a decent sandwich would be great

If they are open (a big if around a holiday), check out B’s BBQ. Cash only.

If you want good Mexican food, try Mario’s tacos or El Azador.
If you're ok with a local-ish chain, Carolina Ale House has lots of good food and beer.

A friend of mine almost drove his 23 window off the road when a bee came through his open safari windows ..

I forgot an important one! Sam Jones BBQ. Go there.

When my family and I used to go we’d take 64 through the entire state of NC but last year the wife and I took a route though west Virginia and Virgina and down 158 since we were staying in corolla and Virgina just seemed to go on forever lol

Feel free to ignore my advice, bu t if you’re taking 264 from Greenville to the outer banks, there are a few neat stops along the way.
Greenville has a recreation area called river park north. It’s free, and with a very short walk you can check out some swamps.
Washington (or little Washington as the locals call it) is a neat town with a waterfront right where the river becomes tidal.
Get your gas in Belhaven and you’ll be fine.
Lake Mattamuskeet is a really cool nature sanctuary with a pump house on the lake.

Heh, I have a feeling I’ll be driving all day tomorrow and still not reach the coast.
Waiting on my dinner at Sam Jones.

So there is a small town called Ayden that’s maybe 15-20 minutes from Greenville. That’s where the Skylight Inn BBQ is, but the locals call it Pete Jones, because that’s who ran it. Sam is the son. Hopefully you got some pork bbq with slaw on it. Eastern Carolina bbq is different than what a lot of places call bbq. They do whole hog, pulled pork, with an apple cider vinegar based sauce. None of that brown sauce.
You're maybe 10 minutes from my old apartment. I used to love going to Sam Jones BBQ.

The cashier said she liked the baked potato, so I got that with pulled chicken. No complaints at all.
The croutons on the salad were weird .

Are you staying in Greenville tonight?
![]() 07/02/2019 at 21:34 |

Yep. Aiming for Belhaven to try to get some sunrise photos, so my day will start crazy early.
Unless I just hit the off button, which seems likely.
Update: sun’s too far north to catch sunrise over the water from there. Damn. Going to be hard to get a watery sunrise by 6.

Belhaven doesn't have a lot going on. Washington is much more picturesque.

It’s a directional problem. Finding public property facing northeast over the water is nearly impossible, unless I go further south and make the trip to the Outer Bankers even longer.

If you leave Greenville and head towards Aurora, you'll pass the PCS Phosphate Mine, the world's largest Phosphate mine. It's on the southern side of the Pamlico river, and then there is a free ferry to get across to Bayview, and then you can take 99 to Belhaven. Not sure that's the vantage point you want though.
![]() 07/02/2019 at 21:49 |

Damn close. I was maybe 50 miles away as the crow flies. Probably a bit less.

I’m giving up on tomorrow sunrise. Getting up at 4 on the off chance I’ll catch a nice photo from a bridge (just about the only places I can look northeast across water) isn’t worth it.
![]() 07/02/2019 at 22:01 |

If you can make it past Belhaven by sunrise, there is one tall bridge over the intracoastal waterway. I circled it on this map. It’s on 264 just a bit past Belhaven. It's the only bridge taller than the treeline.

No problem. I miss that area sometimes.
If you're in Greenville for breakfast, try Abrams and get a cheese biscuit. Or go downtown for a fresh off the line Krispy Kreme donut between 6 and 10am.
